- Eko Flavours can help me overcome the challenge of limited exposure and professional training.
I have passion and basic skills from working in a restaurant since 2020, but I don’t have access to mentorship, advanced culinary training, or a big platform.
This competition would help me refine my skills, learn industry standards, and get my signature dish "Catfish Pepper Soup with Sweet Potatoes" in front of the right people.
Culinary journey
My Culinary Journey
I was brought up around cooking. My mum cooked and sold food, so I grew up in the kitchen and learned the basics early.
But my journey truly began in year 2020 as an undergraduate. I took a job in a restaurant that cooked every order fresh, to order.
That was the turning point. For the first time I was being paid for my cooking. I learned real kitchen skills: how to move fast, keep flavors consistent, manage multiple orders, and respect food safety. The restaurant taught me structure, while home taught me heart.
2020 gave me the foundation. It’s where I went from “I know how to cook” to “I am a cook" and am aiming to be a chef some day.
Cooking inspiration
What inspires me to cook is purpose. In year 2020 during lockdown and ASUU strike, I needed to work to make money. I started cooking professionally in a restaurant and discovered that I was good at it. Cooking became more than a job it became my skill, my hustle, and my passion. Today I’m inspired by the fact that food can solve problems and create opportunities.
Signature dish
My signature dish is Catfish Pepper Soup with Sweet Potatoes.
Growing up, pepper soup meant healing and gathering. I took that memory and added my own touch.
I use fresh catfish, cook it in a peppery, spicy broth, then I garnish it with sweet potatoes. The sweet potatoes make it different. They absorb the pepper and add this soft, sweet balance.
You can have it by itself when you want something light, or pair it with white rice, agidi etc.
To me, this dish shows who I am: rooted in tradition, but not afraid to add my own flavor.
Why I want to participate
I want to participate in Eko Flavours to take my culinary journey to the next level. I started cooking professionally in 2020 and I’ve learned a lot working in a restaurant. Now I’m ready for mentorship, exposure, and competition.
Eko Flavours will help me refine my skills, share my signature dish with more people, and build a career in food. I want to represent the new generation of Nigerian chefs who are creative, hardworking, and proud of our flavors.
What winning would mean
Winning Eko Flavours would mean validation, growth, and opportunity.
It would validate the journey I started in 2020. It would give me the training and platform I need to grow from a restaurant cook to a professional chef. And it would open doors for me to build my brand and inspire other young people that you can turn struggle into skill.
